avelox.....? Hi My Wife has just been put on avelox for a sinus infection. Although she is having trouble taking the pills due to the size of them. It says not to crush, break or smash in anyway. Why can you not cut these pills down?

versantly replied: "call the pharmacist or doctor."

How long does it take for the prescription avelox (antibiotic) to leave your system? I've been feeling dizzy, cold, and I am feeling confused. It says these are common side effects, but I'm not sure what to do.

Scott replied: "Assuming you are a "normal" healthy adult, it will take several days to completely leave your system. However you may notice a decrease in your side effects in 24-48 hrs."

I was given Avelox for abcessed teeth. Is this even going to work? I guess an abcess is a bacterial infection? My doc told me that this was a very strong antibiotic and I am sooo sick of taking them. But this one looks like its only one per day. Has anybody else been given this med for abcess teeth?

richard t replied: "super stuff.....expensive too.......from the cipro family.soundslike overkill but your doc knows better than me"

scorpiorising75 replied: "If you've been taking antibiotics, and the abscess is not cured, that is why you are getting the big guns now."

Doc K replied: "Rarely I would give brand name medication for abscess tooth. Either doctor has a drug representative giving a lot of freebee that he/she became a fan (or obligated to RX) or thinks he/she can impress the patient with fancy antibiotics that's super expensive. If you are sick of taking them, let your dentist know. Antibiotic like amoxicillin or penecillin derivative will work. If you are allergic, there are other generic option. Antibiotic will not remove abcess, but it will control spreading of infection and reduce swelling. Hopefully you will take the tooth out ASAP. and Yes, tooth abcess is bacterial infection."

Avelox for a constant sinus infection? I have had a sinus infection since January, have been on different antibiotics (augmentin was one), and had surgery on Aug. 9 this year. I went to see my doctor Tues. and still had a sinus infection, no surprise to me, for which he finally did a culture. He put me on Prednisone 20MG and Avelox 400MG. Since then I have had pain in my eyes, trouble seeing, severe drowsiness, muscle and joint aches, diziness, and just feel completely awful. It affects my work and school. I don't know what to do, but am thinking of stopping the Avelox. Any tips?

sha sha Sharonna replied: "Call your pharmacist or Dr. and see if this could be a side effect. It probably wouldn't hurt to stop for a day or two and see if the side effects stop. But you might have something else going on that's not related to the Avelox and only your Dr. would be able figure this out. EDIT: here is a web site with the side effects listed"

I was diagnosed today with a UTI and was given 3 days of Avelox. How long till I feel better? I am also getting a catscan to rule out kidney stones tomorrow.

Dr.Akash replied: "avelox may help u out completely. after scanning, if kidney stones are found, don't worry. it is curable without surgery."

Did avelox counter act my birth control or is there something wrong? I'm on my last week of my birth control pills (yaz), which i'm on because the doctor's THINK i have over active hormones. Two weeks ago I got strep throat and my doctor gave me Avelox to treat it. About 2 hours after I took my first pill (avelox) I got really horrible cramps and started bleeding..a period? I dont know. Along with the bleeding and cramps I got a yellow-brown jelley like substance come out but only twice. I am STILL bleeding and have the horrible cramps. If this is a period then it is the second one this month and I dont know why its lasted two weeks instead of the normal 5days. I'm really worried and would like to know whats going on. Did the avelox counter act my birth control? Should I start over with a new pack of yaz? Please help. Thanks.

sokokl replied: "Yes, antibiotics can interact with the pill. I would recommend getting in touch with your doctor as well to see what they want you to do next."

has anyone out there had experianced side effects from avelox? I am supposed to start taking it today for a sinus infection but i am very scared. I do not want to take it. Please someone tell me if they have taken it and it was ok. I need encouragement! Thanks

debk replied: "I took it with no problems for respiratory infection"

starfish replied: "omg, my ent prescribed me that with some steroids and I had never breathed so well before! It was awesome :-) I didnt have any side effects at all, and I am super sensitive to medications. You should be fine."

would the drug avelox cause itching 3 or 4 hours after the first dose? i was precribed it today and took it about 5 hours ago, i feel like my skin is very itchy, would avelox cause an allergic reaction so quickly?

kelli s replied: "sure it could. in fact, if you're going to react to a drug, it is usually within hours, if not minutes. take a benadryl. see if this relieves the itch. if it doesn't you are not allergic to anything. try the med again tomorrow (keep benadryl close by in case of severe reaction), if you itch again, discontinue the medication, call your doc and get another drug. (also, with this drug, you should avoid excessive sun or light exposure, this could contribute to worsening of the skin irritation)"

trx119 replied: "You may b allergic to it. I took it and had the same reaction. Went back to the Dr and had to get a shot to relieve the itching. Does your throat feel as if it's tight or your tongue feel as if it's swelling? If yes then you are allergic and do not take any more!! Go see your doctor!"

jayne beal replied: "that's actually quite slow for a reaction to be honest but yes it could well be. it does sound like it. you don't say if you've come up in hives or a rash or anything so it's not an amazingly strong reaction. my advice would be to stop taking it straight away and go back to the docs."

Is avelox the proper antibiotic for a throat infection? My doctor prescribed it to me, I was expecting amoxacillin, I keep reading that it is used for sinus infections or pneumonia, as well as all the side effects

PinkyTrauma replied: "yes, it kills a broad spectrum of bacteria. However, like you said I've heard it being usedmore often in respiratory infections but it should do the job, just make sure you take them all!"

Is there a correlation between someone who is allergic to the Flouroquinolones(Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox) &? shellfish, a doctor told my wife that people who are allergic to these drugs can also be allergic to shellfish.

J B replied: "This is possible but is not true in all cases. Each person has a different tolerance for antibiotics and also for shellfish and they do not necessarily mean that allergic to one means an allergy to the other."
